Projected 2015 NBA lottery pick Kristaps Porzingis will likely face concerns of softness around Draft Day.
While he does need to get stronger before heading stateside, the 7-foot Latvian proved on Saturday that he is already willing to attack the rim with aggression.
Against Bilbao’s strong front court, Porzingis, 19, unleashed two emphatic dunks in the second quarter.
First, he capitalized on Bilbao’s sloppy defensive rotations. When Alex Mumbrú left him in the corner to close out Ben Woodside, Porzingis slid down the baseline and finished a tough and-1 dunk over Latavious Williams.
A few possessions later, Porzingis took advantage of Bilbao’s collapsing defense again.
With four defenders staring at a driving Berni Rodríguez, Porzingis inched his way to the right elbow. Rodríguez hit him with the pass, and Porzingis took one strong dribble toward the rim before rising over Mumbrú and Marko Todorovic.
Porzingis finished with 9 points, 7 rebounds (3 offensive) and a +/- of plus-17 in Sevilla’s 80-69 win over Bilbao.
After losing their final eight ACB games under former head coach Scott Roth, Sevilla has now won three straight in league play. All three have come against teams in the ACB playoff picture (Valencia, Zaragoza, Bilbao).
